You can read about RSS feeds, or watch slightly humorous video summary here.
What is RSS?
RSS is a notification system used to alert subscribers to changes made to their favorite web sites.
How Do I Read the Feed?
You may have noticed that when you try to click on one of the orange, rectangular buttons, you just get a squirrelly looking page of code. RSS is written in XML (Extensible Markup Language), similar to html. That’s because RSS feeds are designed to be read by a program called a feed reader (or feed aggregator).
Feed Reader Choices
A feed reader, or aggregator, is an application that runs in the background, always searching for updates, never sleeping. Currently, there are three types of readers - standalone, add-ons and built-in web feed readers.
Web-based feed readers are the most popular (though there are standalone, and plug-in versions), and require no special software installation. They work like other web pages, with the notable exception that you can customize your own content.
Some of the most popular choices are MyYahoo, iGoogle, NetVibes and Bloglines—and there are many…MANY…others. (By the way, each of the ones listed are free.)
Hedingham Feeds
The main feed contains every article that gets posted or updated.
Each of the category feeds contains only the articles that fall into that category. A new article posted to the Current Events category, for instance, would appear in both the Current Events Feed as well as the Main Feed.
