New Board Members

The Hedingham Board of Directors welcomes two new members starting in 2008. They are Ed Behan, Board Vice President and Jeanne Malloy, Board Secretary. Jeanne has been a resident for 15 years in the Royal Birkdale section. Before retirement she was Director of Credit for a major corporation and most recently served Hedingham as a neighborhood representative for District 3. She believes that quality of life in the community, careful spending and planning, maintaining the grounds and providing adequate security are top priorities. Ed Behan is a Thornblade resident since 2003 and is very active in community committees and activities. He is interested in getting and maintaining the community to the home owners' expectations as well as working to ensure community financial stability through thoughtful planning and negotiation.

Other Board Members are President, Ron Muccio, Tracy Hicks, Treasurer, and Brent Wood.

Join in the Fun at Hedingham!

Now that the Acorn has dropped to celebrate the New Year in Raleigh, Hedingham also plans to celebrate in a big way. Social Committee Chair Jennifer Taylor and her team are already looking forward to the annual Easter Fun event, to be held on Saturday March 15, 2008, at 1 p.m. at the Linville Ridge Park. Bring your blanket and your picnic lunch, drinks and desserts will be provided. Bring some hard boiled eggs and decorate them at the Easter Egg Table with colorful markers and stickers to get ready for the Easter Bunny! There will be races, relays and age-level egg hunts as well as a gift for each egg hunter to round out the celebration.

Other social events planned for the year include:

Pool opening BBQ: Saturday, 5/24, noon to 3 p.m. at the Willow Oak Pool

Fourth of July Picnic: Saturday, 7/5, noon to 3 p.m. at the Linville Ridge Park

2nd Annual Fall Festival and 1st Annual Hedingham Chili Cook-Off: Saturday, 10/25, 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. at a location to be announced

1st Annual Tree Lighting with Mr. & Mrs. Claus: Friday, 12/5, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at a location to be announced.

Other events in the planning stages include monthly Game Nights at the Willow Oak Clubhouse, Ladies Night Out, Guys Night Out and Couples Night Out at restaurants close to Hedingham where we can meet new friends and stay in touch with old ones.

Hi-Milers Are Going Strong

The Hedingham Hi-Milers club for seniors 55+ has over 50 very active members, and is planning numerous activities for the year. Continuing activities include the weekly Thursday morning golf outings, Wednesday Game Day at the Willow Oak Clubhouse, and dinner at a local restaurant on the fourth Monday of each month. Other events such as local trips to shows and plays, lunches, sporting events, shopping excursions, etc. are planned during the year.

The October meeting featured Luke Grinham, Hedingham's Director of Golf, who gave a talk on the history of golf and golf equipment as well as some helpful putting tips. A putting contest followed. Other fall activities included a nature walk at Anderson Point Park, a docent led tour of the J.C. Raulston Arboretum and a trip to the State Fair. Several Hi-Milers volunteered at the Hedingham Fall Festival, which was fun for all. The November meeting was highlighted by an outstanding performance by the Seabreeze Chorus. In December, several members of the group joined the Raleigh Parks and Recreation's Mystery Tour, and the club held its annual holiday potluck social, toured the Executive Mansion and Haywood Hall to see the Christmas decorations, attended the Golden Years annual holiday bash and went to a performance of the Raleigh Ringers handbell choir.

Information about the club and its activities will be posted at the Hedingham Athletic Center, and will also be on the Hedingham website. For additional information, contact Bonnie Blankenship, 231-7626, bonniekb@nc.rr.com or Alice Jones, 231-7638, aujones@att.net.

New Property Manager on Board

This year we welcome David Bunch, Hedingham's new Property Manager. Originally from Kentucky, David retired from the Army in 2002, and joined the Fred Smith Company in 2006. He manages the Athletic Club and is the contact for a variety of issues raised by Hedingham residents. He views his role as ensuring, along with George Cooper, Director of Community Relations, that contracts between the Homeowners Association and the Fred Smith Company are fully executed and that assignments from the Hedingham Board of Directors are carried out. David makes a point of returning messages within two work hours on weekdays and the next workday for weekend calls. He is in his office at the Athletic Club 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays. Contact him there at 231-9050, extension 3.

Hedingham Security News

The Hedingham Community has entered into a new contract with York Security to patrol the area 7 days per week within the community in a clearly marked vehicle. Contact York by calling 863-8090 to report problems regarding safety and security or dial 911 to contact police. York staff will also monitor and issue citations for parking violations as part of its service.

Other covenant violations and problems noted by residents will be handled through David Bunch, Hedingham Property Manager. Report violations during regular weekday hours by calling David at 231-9050, extension 3.

Security Tips

  • Get a security system installed in your home
  • Make sure all windows, doors and garages are locked
  • Leave a light on at night in both the front and rear of your home or install motion-sensitive lighting
  • Keep all personal belongings out of sight and locked
  • Never leave a spare house key under the door mat
  • Ask your neighbors to watch your home and take in your mail when you are away
  • Leave a radio or TV on when you are not at home
  • Report suspicious activity immediately when you observe it
  • Get involved by attending posted meetings for Neighborhood Watch and Community Safety. Watch the sandwich boards for dates and meeting locations.

Walking the Cart Paths

The only times for walking and jogging on the golf course cart paths are:

May 1 - October 31 before 7 a.m. and after 7 p.m.
November 1 - April 30 before 8 a.m. and after 6 p.m.

All pets accompanying walkers must be leashed and owners must pick up after them. Skateboards, bicycles, and rollerblades or other skates are not allowed on cart paths at any time.

Golfers always have the right of way on the course without regard to the time of day. If you can see golfers while walking, move away from the cart path until the golfers have played through.

New Assistant Golf Pro

Mark Thompson is the new Assistant Pro at the Hedingham Golf Club. He played for the Person High School team in Roxboro, NC before enrolling in the San Diego Golf Academy in Myrtle Beach, SC. His prior pro experience before coming to Hedingham was at the Highland Falls Country Club in the North Carolina mountains. Mark enjoys clubmaking and teaching young golfers. He worked with the First Tee Program while attending school at the Golf Academy.

What's in his bag? Mark carries Taylor Made irons and woods along with a Never Compromise putter, the same clubs he has used since high school.

Contact Mark the Golf Club at 250-3030.

Be a Good Neighbor

Many behaviors characterize a good neighbor. How many of them do you show to your neighbors?

Good Neighbors...

  • Maintain the exterior area of their home, keep the yard mowed and trimmed, and keep toys picked up.
  • Are conscientious about noise that may disturb others, like barking dogs and loud music.
  • Return borrowed items promptly and thank you for lending your things to them.
  • Offer to collect mail and keep an eye on your home when you are away.
  • Replace things that belong to others that they, their children or their pets break or soil.
  • Respect the privacy of others.
  • Practice casual greetings with a smile or a wave when they pass by.

DID YOU KNOW?

Monthly Homeowners Association dues payments must be accompanied by the payment coupon provided to all homeowners the first of each year. Failure to include the coupon with your check results in a $5 processing fee. Bank draft is available for dues payments by calling the Fred Smith Company office at 231-9050.

Plantings will be installed in early February in the traffic calming barriers along Eagle Trace Drive. Drought conditions have delayed plantings until now.

The Hedingham Community Board of Directors meets the 2nd Wednesday evening of each month at the Willow Oak Clubhouse. All meetings are public and a resident forum is included in the agenda to allow all issues to be addressed to the Board.

With the implementation of automated garbage truck equipment, all garbage must be inside your large green container to be picked up. You must take your green container and recycle bin off the curb no later than the day following pick-up. Store all containers behind the front line of your residence in accordance with community guidelines.

Individual yard sales are not allowed. Hedingham sponsors a spring and fall community wide yard sale and advertises it. The spring yard sale, usually planned for mid-April, will be announced on the sandwich boards in advance so you can get ready.

Vehicles must be parked either in the driveway or in the garage of your home. Parking on the grass is not allowed.

The Neighborhood Watch program is gearing up in Hedingham. It is not only a good security measure but an opportunity for residents to meet each other. Meeting dates and times are posted on the sandwich boards.

You should consider attending one of the many community meetings with your children. It is a great civics lesson to let young people see and hear how issues are addressed and resolved within Hedingham.
