With great sadness I report the recent passing of Bonnie Blankenship, President of the Hedingham Hi-Milers Club. Bonnie was very active in the community and we will miss her friendly and caring personality. A tree will be planted in her memory at the Linville Ridge Park.
The recent Resident Golf Tourney was an incredible success! You golfers won’t want to miss out on the next one scheduled for October 25.
The investigation is ongoing and we are installing cameras to catch the vandals who throw eggs and deface our public areas. Please be assured that we will prosecute to the full extent of the law.
The Management Company has restructured its work force and we have lost George Cooper, who was certainly an asset to our community. He will be missed by us all. The Director of Community Associations duties are now being handled by Jake Austin. Direct your questions and requests to David Bunch, Community Manager, at 231-9050 ext. 3 or email at hhoa@fredsmithcompany.com.
Rob Muccio, President
Eighty five young people are participating on the Hedingham Swim Team this summer and the meet schedule is posted on the Hedingham.org website. Home meets are held at the Grand Traverse pool. A community parade is planned in August as part of the end of season celebration by the Swim Team. If you see them passing by, give a cheer!
Homeowners who decide to rent their property must file a copy of the lease agreement with the Community Manager. It is important to ensure that renters are familiar with and agree to abide by Hedingham Community Guidelines and Covenants.
For everyone’s protection, it is recommended that a background check is conducted on all potential tenants.
Nothing improves property values more than showing pride in our community. Now that beautiful weather is here and the drought lessened, it’s time to get out, take a look around, and ask yourself “Would I like to live next to this?” You should say “Absolutely!” In any event, plan a weekend to put in those plantings you have wanted to do, plan and complete home improvement projects, clean up clutter, and make yourself and your neighbors proud. Do your part to make Hedingham sparkle.
Remember to call the Carolina One Call Center at 1-800-632-4949 before you dig to avoid hitting utility lines.
Visit www.raleighnc.gov to keep updated on current watering restrictions for lawns, flowers and other uses.
- The new Covenant Appeals Committee will soon begin its work to offer hearings to covenant violators with multiple occurrences cited. If you are among the few notified of a hearing, it’s your only chance to discuss the matter before additional action and/or fines are assessed. If you would like to be a member of the committee, contact Jake Austin at 553-9667.
- Summer is the most common time for petty vandalism and car break-ins. Deter would-be thieves by locking your vehicles and don’t leave anything in sight inside.
- The Homeowner’s Association is considering allowing paid advertising space on the community website. If you would be interested in this, contact Jen Taylor at 250-3259.
- The Board recently passed a resolution to revise the date homeowner dues payments are considered late from the 15th of each month to the 5th of the month. The new late dues rule takes effect in January 2009.
- The Finance Committee is exploring options to accept homeowner dues payments using credit cards or other electronic funds transfer methods.
- The Athletic Club is getting new exercise equipment.
- No fishing is allowed in the pond next to Number One Tee off Wild Dunes Drive.
- Adult only swim time is available at the Grand Traverse pool through August 23. The hours are 10AM to 11AM Monday through Friday and 9AM to 10AM on Saturdays. No children are allowed in the pool area during adult swim time.
- Guests are not allowed in the Athletic Club gym after 6PM.
- Parking violations are attributed to the street address where they occur and carry the same weight as a covenant violation. If you have an overnight guest who needs to park on the street, leave a note on the dashboard to avoid a ticket.
- Picking up your pet’s waste is not only a community requirement, it is the law. Waste stations are located conveniently in many areas. Failure to clean up after pets can result in a $250 fine to the owner.
Satellite dishes have become a very popular way to receive television access. As we progress with this technology, there are some basics to consider when ordering and installing satellite service. Hedingham community guidelines provide that:
- Before a satellite dish is installed, a request must be submitted to and approved by the Modification Committee. Obtain a Modification Form from the Management Company or the Hedingham.org website. Include a sketch of where the dish will be installed. The Modification Committee meets the third Tuesday of each month and responds to requests within a week of its meeting.
- A satellite dish cannot exceed 36 inches in diameter.
- A satellite must be installed on the rear of the roof of the home.
If you’re stuck in the 80’s and still have a television that operates on ‘rabbit ears’, read this. Effective February 17, 2009, all TV signals will be digital. You’ll need a converter box to get reception if you don’t have cable or satellite service. Ask for a free coupon valued at $40 by calling 1-888-388-2009 or apply online at www.dtv2009.gov.
Welcome, new neighbor! You’ll want to contact the Community Manager at the number below. Make sure you are familiar with the community guidelines and find out about amenities, swipe cards and activities.

Tim and Robin Maura have been Hedingham residents for 10 years. About 2 ½ years ago, Tim, now 49, was diagnosed with an inoperable heart condition. At the time, family members contributed funds for Tim to travel to Thailand for stem cell injections directly into his heart. The treatment, not currently used in the United States, resulted in some improvement in his condition and his doctors here believe that additional stem cell therapy will result in additional progress.
The anticipated cost of the second trip is a staggering $26,500. The family has so far received only about $6,000 toward the total amount needed. Robin Maura approached the Hedingham Board at its May meeting to ask permission to collect aluminum cans for a recycling fund raiser at the Willow Oak Pool. Her request was approved, and the recycle container is sponsored by TT&E Iron and Metal in Garner. The TT&E owner, Ronnie Thompson, has personally contributed $1,200 toward the effort to get Tim back to Thailand. A neighbor of the Mauras, with whom Tim and Robin have not much more than wave and smile contact, also conducted a small fund raiser at her place of work.
Until the treatment fund increases, there is no date set for Tim’s trip and next round of treatment. His condition is currently stable but the need is pressing.
Perhaps your household can set aside your recyclable cans and bring them to the Willow Oak Pool. If you would like to contribute to the fund, you may bring your check made payable to Tim Maura to the Hedingham Athletic Club during normal business hours. Although your contribution is not tax deductible, it may truly save the life of a Hedingham neighbor.
The golf course winding through our community is not owned by Hedingham residents. Residents are allowed golfing privileges and walking or jogging privileges on the golf course cart paths from May 1 through October 31 before 7AM after 7PM daily as long as it does not interfere with the play of golfers. November 1 through April 30, the cart paths are available to walkers before 8AM and after 6PM. Golfers always have the right of way so please defer to them when you walk the cart paths. Bicycles and skateboards are not permitted on the cart paths at any time.
A hearty THANK YOU to the volunteers who have helped with Hedingham’s social events this spring. Special helpers include:
